It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Tristan, age 18, who left us far too soon.
Tristan was born on March 25, 2008 to Kim Councillor and Trevor Smith. Tristan was a kind, loving young man whose presence brought joy and laughter to the lives of everyone who knew him.
Above all else, he cherished his family, especially his sister Amelia, and his friends. He had a special way of making those around him feel loved, and the memories he created with those closest to him will remain treasured forever.
Tristan also had a deep love for animals and was happiest when surrounded by the unconditional love and companionship they brought. He took good care of his pets and always made sure they were looked after.
Music was another important part of his life, providing a soundtrack to countless memories. While The Weekend was a favorite of his, he had recently expanded his musical taste and enjoyed listening to all kinds of music. When he was able, Tristan also enjoyed spending time outdoors. Berry picking with his mom was something he enjoyed very much and it was time they always cherished the time together.
Tristan’s passion for basketball was well known. He could often be found watching, playing, or talking about the game he loved. Throughout high school Tristan was a member of the Muskie basketball teams and this year he played on the new local club team, the Borderland Bolts. These teams, the experiences and the friendships developed through them made a profound impact on Tristan, especially in this last year. They helped to shape his plans for his future and his hopes of continuing to develop as a basketball player.
When he wasn’t listening to music or enjoying basketball, Tristan also loved playing hockey, baseball and video games. Those moments of fun, competition, and laughter with his friends are memories that will be held close to the heart.
Tristan’s love for and faith in the Toronto Maple Leafs was legendary and he was so happy to have seen them play a few times. His signed Leafs jersey was one of his prized possessions. Watching the Leafs was something he enjoyed doing with his dad and he always hoped they would one day win the Cup again.
This summer Tristan was working as a youth summer recreation worker in his community. He was happy to have this position as giving back to others was something he valued very much. Supporting younger kids was something he wanted to continue doing and this job was a way for him to start on that road.
Though his life was far too short, the impact he made in his 18 years will never be measured by time. He will be remembered for his loving heart, his passions, his smile, and, most importantly, the love he had for his family and friends. Tristan was thoughtful, well-mannered, gentle and kind. He also gave the best hugs.
He leaves behind a family who loved him deeply and will miss him beyond words, along with friends and loved ones whose lives were made brighter simply because he was part of them.
Tristan is survived by his parents, Kim Councillor and Trevor Smith, his sister Amelia, and his grandparents Dean and Nancy Councillor and Sharon Smith and Roger Smith, great grandmother Irene Smith. He leaves behind his aunties and his uncles who will miss him dearly, along with countless other cousins and friends.
Tristan was predeceased by his Great-Great Grandmas Rosie Cyr and Agnes Councillor, Great-Great Grandpas Rennie Councillor and Billy Smith, Great Grandmas Roseanna Councillor, Alice Smith and Florence and Ethel Cyr, Great Grandpas Randy Councillor, Gerald Smith and Dempsey Calder, Great Uncles Raymond and Russel Cyr, Uncles Nolan Windigo and Jordan Councillor and his beloved cat, Tigger.
Pallbearers will be Trevor Smith, Sean Councillor, Grayson Councillor, Chase Councillor, Darius Smith and Gabe Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Thearon Green, Keith Snowball, Braxton Woods along with all of his family, friends and teammates.
A traditional wake was held on Monday August 24, 2026 from 4 p.m at the Naicatchewenin First Nation Gymnasium followed by a traditional service on Tuesday August 25, 2026 at 10 am from the Naicatchewenin Gymnasium.
