Dealing with despicable fire, water and wind

I absolutely love long weekends! The only thing that could have made it better was more sunshine!

Friday was a scary day with wind and fire. We had no hydro all day and well into the night. As I have mentioned before, it is more of a worry when the animals are looking for water. I did start thinking about fire and not having access to water, either, but then I thought I should not go down that path! I am so sorry to hear about the losses that people have experienced. I despise fire, water and wind!

I was lucky enough to get a load of fertilizer on Saturday. My cab tractor had a broken loader, so I used an open station tractor. I wore my coveralls (didn’t wear them all winter), winter jacket, toque and mitts. I had some issues with that tractor as well, but I made it work. I need another load, but I will wait until closer to the end of the week and hope that it isn’t too wet.

The wind took off a bunch of shingles from my house as well. Thankfully, my friend Jason (after doing 11 other houses on Sunday) came and put shingles on. It was one shingle less than one bundle.

I was able to do many little farm tasks on Sunday. I might have added more jobs to my list than I took off, but I am thankful for what I accomplished. Monday was my housework day! I spent all day cleaning, organizing and getting rid of stuff. I also had Shawn come and clean windows, so my house felt great by Monday night. Lexi and Bettie don’t always understand keeping the floor clean! Sunday evening, we also celebrated our youngest niece’s 18th birthday! I can’t believe both girls are all grown up! Time sure flies by.

We ended up having to stop planting on Thursday and Friday because we were into small seeds, and with those wind gusts, our envelopes would have been long gone! This is the first time I have experienced this. The wind did not make you want to be outside at all, and quite frankly, it was scary. We will continue to plug away as the weather permits, but we have no control over Mother Nature.

Jason Schram would like to bring the hoof trimmer back sometime in the next while. If you have anything that you would like to trim, please reach out to Jason at (807) 276-1207.

Local Food Week is coming up from June 1 to 7. I hope you will make time to purchase local food and appreciate the hard work it takes to make this food. On June 4, we are doing a Virtual Beef Farm Tour with AgScape. Rustin and Ryker Chartier are hosting. This is the first time for a beef farm and the first time for the North! AgScape (formerly Ag in the Classroom) has many virtual farm tours that are available online. Classrooms will tune in and ask questions of Rustin and Ryker live! I am excited!

On June 27, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., Windy Ridge Farm is hosting a pancake breakfast on the farm! Windy Ridge is one of our three remaining dairy farms in the district. They have a new facility with robots milking cows. It will be worth a visit! Mark it down and plan to attend. They are asking you to RSVP by June 10. You can text Donald at (807) 276-9623 or Marilyn at (807) 271-3663.
