Friday, May 15, saw the district dealing with extreme high winds which lead to many fires throughout the district. A fire was reported on LaVallee Road North, near Rittau Rd. on Friday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. The fire was spotted by Mel MacDonald, who took fast action to have it reported to the Municipal office. Thankfully the fire was extinguished fairly quickly, with LaVallee Fire Department being assisted by Alberton FD. Quick action prevented this fire from jumping the road and getting into the bush and muskeg on the other side.
Once the fire was contained the LaVallee FD then went to assist Chapple FD as the situation there and in Morley was much worse.
Reeve Lucille MacDonald wants to emphasize appreciation to LaVallee and Alberton FD. Without their quick response, losses would have been much more significant. She also thanks Michelle Sabbe for calling the FD and Neil MacDonald and Brody Strachan as they were in the area cutting down fallen trees immediately. Saturday morning did see power lines down on LaVallee Rd. North, but they were neutralized. Lucille also pointed out how the hydro crews were run off their feet but saw to it that all issues ended in safety.
North West Bay was evacuated in the early evening on Friday.
