Thunder Bay’s pothole problem persists as wet weather slows repairs

THUNDER BAY- The city’s road manager says crews are working on filling potholes, but the weather is imposing some challenges.

“We do have crews out, four to six each day, along with the Python trying to fill those holes best we can right now. It is a challenge because there is water in the holes. Sometimes there was ice or snow, looking back, even as early as a week ago. We are out making those repairs with cold mix asphalt until the hot mix plants open up,” Ian Spoljarich said.

He said the hot mix asphalt plants normally open around the May long weekend, but this year, Spoljarich said he is hoping they will open up earlier.

The cold mix asphalt will not adhere properly under wet and icy conditions to make a proper repair, he said. If the city sees some drier weather over the next couple of weeks, the cold mix will start to last longer.

Spoljarich said they are focused on the high traffic areas at the moment. The main arterial roads are first, and crews will move to the secondary roads.

“Today, we have six crews out across the city along with the Python, and right now they are working on those arterial roads that see the most traffic volume,” he said.

Spoljarich advises the public to slow down and give space when passing road crews working on the pothole across the city.
