‘Curl for Cancer’ seeking more teams

The annual “Curl for Cancer” to benefit the Canadian Cancer Society is slated to run for the eighth time next weekend. But with only 20 rinks signed up so far, organizers are looking for four more to make it a full field.
“Curling is open to all people of all ages, and it’s a fun-filled, action-packed day,” co-organizer Nadine Johnson enthused of the event that takes place Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Fort Frances Curling Club.
There is a $20 entry fee per person, which includes a day of curling, supper, a dance, and entertainment.
Each team also is required to raise at least $100 in pledges for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Johnson stressed the event is a non-competitive “funspiel,” with each team playing three four-end games.
The deadline to register a team is next Wednesday (Feb. 14).
The curling gets underway at 10 a.m., with penny tables and a 50/50 draw going on throughout the day.
“It’s pretty cold out, so it would be a good idea to come on down and cheer everyone on, maybe drop off a pledge, join in on the dance, join us for supper,” Johnson said.
“It’s a great way to have fun and make new friends.”
Members of the public are welcome to attend the dinner for $10 each, with food provided by Lee Garden.
This year’s event also will include a social featuring local band “Night Shift.” Admission to that is $5 at the door for non-participants.
In past years, the event has raised anywhere from $8,000-$16,000.
“Hopefully we’ll be in that range again,” Johnson said.
