Crocuses being sold for CNIB

While it may not seem like the season for flowers, you can brighten up your bleak January days with a new crocus plant as the Canadian National Institute for the Blind is taking orders until next Thursday.
“We sent out faxes to all the businesses in the area so they could pre-order, and we’re already getting quite a few orders,” said Vanessa Hebert, executive director of the Fort Frances Volunteer Bureau, which is handling the orders locally.
“It’s preferable you pre-order because by the time we get the crocuses in on [Feb. 4], there might not be any left,” she added.
Hebert noted 500 pots, each holding five-six imported Dutch crocus bulbs, are scheduled to be delivered here Feb. 4, at which time they will be available for pick-up and walk-in sales—while supplies last—at the volunteer bureau (in the old CN station) from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Cost is $4 per pot or three for $10. People can pay by cash or a cheque made out to the CNIB. Orders can be placed by calling 274-9555 or fax 274-5456.
Hebert said she was expecting the CNIB fundraiser to be a success once again.
“Last year we had a blast. We had 200 plants here, and we had to put in an order for more,” she noted. “People have come to expect this event at this time of the year.”
She added the volunteer bureau will be open Feb. 4-7 to sell the crocuses, as well as other specialty items from the CNIB such as note cards, and possibly painted pots and glasses with a crocus emblem on them.
