While Rainycrest Home for the Aged remains closed to visitors due to cases of a Norwalk-like virus there, the situation is improving, administrator Jill Colquhoun said Thursday.
“As of this morning, we have 17 residents showing symptoms, two of which are new cases,” she noted.
On Wednesday, 27 residents showed symptoms of the gastroentritis virus.
“The staff are very conscientious, having residents remain in their units, ensuring they get plenty of rest and fluids,” said Colquhoun. “And that’s helping the situation.”
Ill residents also have been fed a diet of as much soup, juice, ginger ale, and Jell-O as they request, she added.
Symptoms of the Norwalk and Norwalk-like viruses include vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea. Infected people usually recover in two-three days without serious or long-term health effects.
On the advice of the Northwestern Health Unit, Rainycrest announced late Tuesday it would not allow family and friends of residents to visit until the situation improved.
