An experiment which could lead to cost savings for the Abitibi-Consolidated mill here will wrap up tomorrow, general manager John Harrison said Thursday morning.
“We’ve had all three machines going since Tuesday,” he noted. “Using an alternate filler type within the sheet, we’re trying to duplicate all the grades of paper we produce.
“It’s a very big undertaking. [But] if the trial’s successful, we’ll be able to duplicate the full range of our product mix without any detriment to quality,” added Harrison.
“It’s a potential cost savings.”
He explained the potential savings lies in the fact the filler is a synthetic (precipitated calcium carbonate), which can be produced locally as opposed to a filler that has to be shipped in from elsewhere—as it the current filler is.
“It’s been done in a number of places across the country,” noted Harrison.
Thursday’s Daily Bulletin is printed on the new paper.
