The local Liberal riding association will have to wait until March 1 to declare their candidate for the next provincial election.
Originally scheduled for Saturday (Feb. 8), the party postponed its meeting to select a candidate due to a technicality.
Association president Roger Valley said Monday they were unaware a cut-off date for nominations had to be declared prior to the meeting.
“We were trying to drum up candidates and we missed timelines and had no cut-off date declared,” he noted. “March 1 is [now] the day [to vote].
“Feb. 14 is the cut-off,” he added. “We’re looking at an acclamation.”
The only candidate to put his name in the hat for the Liberal nod so far is Ear Falls Mayor Geoff McClain.
“He’s a good candidate,” said Valley. “He’s outspoken and willing to stand up for himself.”
Both the NDP and the PCs already have chosen their candidates. Local MPP and NDP leader was acclaimed last year while Cathe Hoszowski was formally acclaimed to carry the Tory banner Feb. 1.
The Liberals now will hold their nomination meeting March 1 starting at 2 p.m. at the Ukrainian Hall in Dryden.
