A request to review the decision to sell Sunny Cove, the library’s budget, sewer and water billing and a report of tens of thousands of dollars raised for the local food bank were among the agenda items considered during Monday’s regular meeting of the Fort Frances Town Council.
A letter from concerned citizen Terry Ogden suggested the Town has an obligation to reconsider its decisions to sell the former Sunny Cove camp and make it “better than it ever was.” Although Mayor Andrew Hallikas suggested that a request to review the decision was a high bar to meet, he lauded Ogden’s efforts. “This is what citizen advocacy looks like when done well,” Hallikas said. “If you want to interact with council, use Terry as your example.”
Nadine Cousineau, CEO of the Fort Frances Public Library and Technology Centre, gave a report on this year’s budget. Councillor Wendy Brunetta and Hallikas both praised Cousineau for her efforts in making the library more efficient with a one per cent decrease in the library’s operating budget.
In response to a letter sent by citizen Riley Pollard, Town council decided to allow monthly payment of sewer and wastewater bills, but the billing will remain bi-monthly.
Lastly, Councillor Kaleb Firth said local foodbanks took home $35,000 in donations thanks to a variety of donation campaigns across town.
