Happy New Year friends! I wonder how long it will take me to remember to write 2026? I am still in Christmas mode mostly here but everyday I try and removed some type of decoration that is more related to Christmas and turn things into more of a winter theme. I won’t take my tree down until Sunday as we still need to celebrate Ukrainian Christmas and then I have a couple of busy days so it will wait. It really doesn’t bother me much but I am excited as I have a new table that I would like to set up in that area to hold some of my plants. I am sure I have mentioned this before that spending more time inside my house gets me thinking of all the things I should be doing – like painting, re-organizing and cleaning. It is dangerous and expensive because it is easy to shop from the couch.
The cattle are doing well and I am still feeding them at the back of the property since there isn’t much snow so it is easy to get to them. They are walking home for water so they are getting some good exercise. Lexi and I walk to them every morning and then ski to them later in the day. I am trying to improve my skiing skills before I join the ski club. I think opening and closing gates on your skis is a pretty impressive task and cows make the best ski trials until you get to a frozen turd. There is still a lot of ice and that does make it a bit trickier. I really don’t want to break any bones so I am trying to be cautious. It is a really good workout though! The first few times the cows seen sliding along they really didn’t know what to think.
Mid-month I will revaccinate the first calving heifers with Scour-Bos. I need to get my cow records caught up because I started that after selling animals last fall but haven’t gotten back to it. I am working on getting myself back into a better routine as my holidays are over now. (I have to keep telling myself that.) I plan to move my cow’s home permanently around the end of the month. They are due to start calving on February 20th but you never know what can happen. One of my friends had a calf born on New Years and it was one month early but she is doing fine.
Just a quick reminder that the Rainy River Cattlemen are hosting their AGM on Thursday, January 15, at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Way School. You really should plan on attending to hear the latest updates from the Beef Farmer’s of Ontario and where your check-off dollars are being spent and all their lobbying efforts. We also would like to hear from our membership on what you’d like us to do for you going forward outside of the Sales Barn! We are still looking for a new Sales Barn Manager and are very much open to changing up that position but we do need to hear your opinions. Kuorikoski Farms is sponsoring our coffee break and we will have fresh, locally made doughnuts! Please join us!
