The provincial government will make a capital investment of $100,000, through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp., for infrastructure upgrades at Couchiching First Nation, it was announced yesterday.
“Our government is supporting communities across Northern Ontario as they undertake infrastructure improvements and capital acquisitions that will help them thrive and prosper,” said Northern Development and Mines minister Jim Wilson, who also chairs the NOHFC.
“The initiatives we are supporting today will provide better roads, improved safety, and have positive economic impacts in the area,” he added.
Couchiching will conduct infrastructure upgrades of $232,000, including the re-surfacing of two local roads and the installation of 11 highway lights on a section of Highway 11 running through the community.
In addition, the Heron Landing Road will be widened and resurfaced, providing better access to the new golf course, pow-wow grounds, and Stanjikoming Bay.
“This road upgrade program will help us meet our commitment to better serve the residents and visitors in our area,” said Couchiching Chief Charles McPherson.
“We could not have undertaken these much-needed improvements without the help of the Ontario government,” he added.
“Through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, our government is supporting initiatives that build strong northern communities,” said Wilson.
“As chair of the Heritage Fund, I am committed to working with our board members to support projects that improve services for northerners.”
