Speaker to address employing the disabled

The employment supports branch of the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) is the subject of an information session slated for tomorrow (April 9) at 3 p.m. at the Community Activity Centre (205 1/2 Third St. E.)
Carolyn Skirten, supervisor of employment services at Careers Unlimited, a branch the Fort Frances Association for Community Living, said yesterday that the seminar will feature guest speaker Paula James, an employment specialist with the ODSP out of Kenora.
“She’ll explain the basics of the program and how people can access it,” noted Skirten, adding the information session is aimed at both people with disabilities seeking employment and employers wanting to know more about hiring disabled people.
Some of the services provided at Careers Unlimited include:
•assistance completing the application package for ODSP employment supports;
•support to create an employment plan that is achievable;
•vocational assessment and pre-employment training, which include Health and Safety awareness, résumé writing, and interview skills;
•assistance searching for jobs;
•setting up on-the-job training or job placement; and
•follow-up services to achieve job maintenance.
