We have certainly experienced a weather change, and we could have done without the crazy winds yesterday, but the sun looks like it is going to bless us again this week! It looks like it’s more moderate temperatures, but we will take it! It looks to be a great working weather.
I have a raven family that lives in my farmyard and near my well house. I have mentioned before that they were helping themselves with our duck eggs. We found a way to curb that a bit, but they were back to eating them again. If I locked the ducks up at night, they didn’t have access to the eggs, and I could get them in the mornings. This seemed to upset my raven family, and they were very vocal with me while I did chores. My mom went over near lunch time one day last week to let Lexi out of the house to find the raven eating one of my female ducks! We were very sad, and I think it is time the Raven family relocated. I am locking them up full-time now and the ducks are sad because they enjoy freedom.
Chantelle and I had a busy, hot week at the Station knocking off many of the jobs on our to-do list. We successfully finished our canola trial and soybean variety trial. The canola was not so successful though – our new combine really doesn’t like canola, and we may have to consider keeping our old combine just to work with canola. We have a wheat block and soybean block to take some yield from this week, and we will have our combining completed. We then focused our time on the hops and finished that job. The yields were not outstanding but better than I thought they might be. We have an alfalfa trial that we are supposed to be taking some third cut samples from but I am not sure if we should do that! There is still some fertilizer to spread, soil sample to take and we really should cut some grass again! I am happy to see more sun for this week even if we have to wear jackets. Chantelle has really been a huge help to tackle these jobs and get me back on track!
On the farm the biggest jobs are getting the calves weaned and manure hauled. I will bring the cattle home this weekend and lock them up for the week. I have people purchasing animals off the farm, I will retain some heifers, and I will take the rest to the cattle sale. It will be a huge bonus if the barn yards stays dry for this process! My abattoir dates start next week so that pen will start to get smaller now. Then it starts all over again once calves are weaned! Our lambs will be finished and sent to the abattoir at the end of the month as well.
This weekend we celebrated a very special couple’s wedding day! Congratulations to Katie and Brayden Kreger. They couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day! Who would have thought we would see a temperature of 28 C on October 4th! It was a wonderful day and great time. We wish Katie and Brayden only the BEST!
Our next cattle sale is quickly approaching – October 18th! Please let Katie know what you are planning to bring to the sale. Text or call Katie at 807-275-6273.
