I live by the Rainy River. The water that flows along this river already has been used four times (Valerie Falls, Calm Lake, Crilly, and Fort Frances) to provide electric power for this area.
The river then flows into Lake of the Woods and, in Kenora, its power is trapped again (at the Abitibi Dam and the Norman Dam) as it enters the Winnipeg River.
Twenty miles north and Ontario has another dam and power station (the Whitedog Generating Station) before the river crosses the border with Manitoba.
The water has provided Northwestern Ontario with most of its electricity. Manitoba now takes its share.
There is a dam and power station before the river enters Lake Winnipeg. When the water leaves the lake, it has been joined by other rivers and its volume increased. Before it reaches the Arctic Ocean, it has generated power at least three times.
Manitoba sells its surplus power even as far as Minneapolis, Mn.
Ontario has major rivers that also flow into the Arctic. The only one that provides power is the Moose and that is not fully developed. It has a railway along its banks to Moose Factory, so it is possible to get supplies to the area.
The main rivers are the Albany, the Attawapiskat, the Winisk, and the Severn. These rivers all start in the pre-Cambrian Shield and empty into either Hudson Bay or James Bay, so there is a fall of at least 1,000 feet.
Perhaps we should hire one of the Manitoban engineers, who has had experience building power stations north of Ontario’s North Country.
The nuclear power stations are too dangerous. The Chernobyl disaster killed people 200+ miles away. The U.S., Great Britain, and other countries have also had problems. They are costly, over budget, as well as dangerous.
It seems the people in eastern Ontario hate to spend any money in the north even if it is safe, reliable, and efficient—and for their benefit.
