The first year for the Penalty Box Canteen at the Memorial Sports Centre in Fort Frances was marked by a raucous anniversary event.
Riley Pollard, the eatery’s owner, said the Sept. 11 party to make the milestone was a huge success and drew a fantastic turnout.
“It was amazing to reconnect with so many of our regulars while also welcoming lots of new faces,” he said. “The Poutine Bar, pizza, and dainties were a hit, and seeing people enjoy them reminded me why we do what we do.”
A whole year of weekends fulltime inside the canteen for Pollard culminated in the door prize of Jets-Maple Leafs tickets in Winnipeg for Danielle Quesnel.
“Funny enough, she had been looking at Jets versus Leafs tickets the night before the event, so she couldn’t believe her luck when she won the prize pack,” Pollard said. “We’re thrilled for her and hope she enjoys the game.”
The Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce announced award nominations and The Penalty Box Canteen has been nominated for both Business of the Year and Customer Service honours.
“I’m humbled and honoured — it really shows the impact we’ve been able to make in just one year,” he said.
Pollard said thanks to the public at the special event with offerings of freebies from the Fry & Tot Bar with all the toppings available including curds, cheese, tortillas, chicken, bacon. Slices of homemade pizza and desserts were included.
On a personal level, he said the Penalty Box Canteen has filled his life as much as the eatery has filled the bellies of sports fans.
“Being able to serve our community, welcome travellers for tournaments, and even reach people beyond the arena through Uber Eats has been incredible,” he said. “It still amazes me that people come specifically for our food and drinks — but that’s just our community. They show up when needed and the support has blown me away.”
The Penalty Box can accommodate corporate gatherings, birthday parties, community events, and sports tournament.
