The Fort Frances High School Muskie Football team started their second week of full equipment practices at Monday August 25. This week of practice culminates on Thursday with the annual Black and Gold inter-squad game at 5 p.m. After the Black and Gold game, the Touchdown Club is hosting a welcome barbecue for parents and players.
Muskie Football provides students with the opportunity to represent their community and school while improving their physical fitness, social skills, and learning the importance of punctuality, persistence, and preparation.
The Muskies 76th season kicks off 3:00 p.m. Friday Sept.5 when they host the Daniel Mcintyre Maroons in the opening week of Winnipeg High School Football League play.
Muskie Head Coach Lou Gauthier expects at least 25 players to return from the 2024 team that finished in third place with a record of 5 wins and 2 losses in the Winnipeg High School Football League AAA division.
The Muskie coaches expect several new players to earn starting roles this season.
Gauthier is supported by a strong list of assistant and position coaches this season, many of them Muskie football alumni. Greg Allan (Defensive Backs), Shane Beckett (Running Backs) Vic Davis (Offensive Coordinator, Receivers), Zack Pocock (Assistant Head Coach, Defensive Line), Jacob Ryll (Assistant Head Coach, Offensive Line), Brady Meeks (Quarterbacks), Merrick Cheetham (Defensive and Offensive Line, Dennis Ogilvie (Linebackers and Running Backs), Jaxon Strachan (Linebackers and Running Backs), Seth Mason (Assistant Coach).
The Muskies play their first three games at home then may not see a game at home again unless the qualify for a home playoff game.
Following the Maroons in week one, their northwestern Ontario rivals will come to town. The Muskies take on the Dryden Eagles in week 2 on Friday Sept. 12 and then the Muskie homecoming game is scheduled for Friday Sept. 19 with the Beaver Brae Broncos in town From Kenora.
