Dear sir:
There is bill before the Justice Committee that, if passed, will gag free speech in Canada.
Bill C-250 (formerly Bill C-415) has passed second reading and it is gathering momentum, as some provincial justice ministers have spoken in favour of it. The justice committee will be reporting back to Parliament by May 15 with a recommendation.
Bill C-250 seeks to amend the Criminal Code of Canada by adding “sexual orientation” to the list of groups (i.e., colour, race, religion, and ethnic origin) in the “hate propaganda” section. The attempt was made to include it back in 1982, but it was refused by Parliament at that time.
The Criminal Code already bans promotion of hatred and violence against members of identifiable groups.
Because the term “sexual orientation” does not distinguish between the person and the activity, it would criminalize the expression of dissent on the subject. This would gag medical researchers, educators, religious institutions, blood services, governments, clergy, and parents!
Should parents be considered criminal if they teach their children right from wrong? Bill C-250 would label the Bible as “hate literature!”
Creating further problems is the lack of definitions surrounding their terminology. “Hate,” “hate propaganda,” and “sexual orientation” have yet to be defined.
If this is to be done by the courts, the precedents make for a gloomy forecast for Christians and others who refuse to affirm the politically-correct philosophy concerning this subject.
This is a private member’s bill, so members don’t have to vote the party line. If we would write, e-mail, or call as many MPs and even MPPs (some provincial ministers are expressing support for the federal bill), it would make a difference.
More information, and addresses for MPs and MPPs, are readily available online.
Sincerely,
Ruth Teeple
