FORT FRANCES—The 56 jumpers participating in the Voyageur Lions Club’s annual “Polar Plunge” on New Year’s Day raised more than $19,000 for local charities.
Lorne Gill set a new record for the most money raised for the jump, with $3,522. Jim Martindale was next at $1,525, followed by Jillian Gustafson ($1,338.50).
Gill also won for best costume, along with Maureen Hahkala and Derek Horton. The best costumed pair award was given to Shari Humphrey and Greg Mattson.
The top group fundraiser were the Fort Frances Aquanauts, whose five jumpers raised $2,500. The Fort Frances Visserettes and Boys’ Gymnastics Club raised about $1,950 while the Muskie Sports Association’s 11 jumpers brought in $1,800.
The Muskie football team splashed down with $1,200.
Organizer Val Martindale said it was best conditions they’d ever had for the jump, with sunny skies, mild temperatures, and no wind.
