On the edge of possible disaster

The Chapple, Emo and LaVallee Fire and Emergency Services Department may have averted catastrophe last night after they responded to “multiple reports” of a grass fire located near Little Pine Lake on Hwy 71.

According to a Facebook post from the Department, they decided to check it out in a “non-emergency” capacity. Upon discovering a small, but quickly growing grass fire, knowing that MNRF resources are strained dealing with other fires and others might not be able to respond to the fire until the morning, they jumped into action to ensure it wouldn’t continue to grow into a deadly and dangerous situation overnight. The Department fought the fire until 1:30 a.m., at which point it was deemed extinguished, and MNRF was on the scene this morning to ensure it is completely out.

The Rainy River District remains a Restricted Fire Zone, with much of the area in the high or extreme risk area for forest fires.
