Bass tourney asking town for loan

In an effort to reduce operating expenditures for years to come, the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship is requesting an interest-free loan in the amount of $50,000-55,000 that would be paid back in five years.
Gary Rogozinski, chair of the FFCBC board of directors, appeared before council Monday night to make his case.
“Last year, the Fort Frances [Canadian] Bass Championship ended up in the red and the main reason is operating costs,” he remarked, noting everything from table and chair rental to fencing and insurance rates have been on the rise.
In 2002, it cost $10,183 to rent and transport tables and chairs for the week of the bass tourney. This year, that’s estimated to cost closer to $11,000.
“An opportunity presents itself whereas if the FFCBC were to purchase tables and chairs, along with a trailer for storage and transportation, at a total cost of $50,000-55,000, it would definitely ensure the longevity of the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship,” said Rogozinski.
Coun. Struchan Gilson asked why the FFCBC would be asking for a loan when it is able to spend money elsewhere this summer, such as for repairs to the boat launch at the Sorting Gap Marina.
Rogozinski replied that money came out of reserves and only can be used in “emergency” situations.
“Will you use [the tables and chairs] to make a profit?” asked Coun. Deane Cunningham.
“[The FFCBC doesn’t] want to be in the business of renting tables and chairs. That’s why we’re asking the town to get involved. We want to start a dialogue,” said Rogozinski.
“I think it’s a great opportunity.”
He added a partnership with other tournaments, the town, and the Rainy River Future Development Corp. could benefit the whole district.
Council agreed to refer the request to the Community Services and Administration and Finance executive committees for their recommendations.
