It’s getting tight at the top.
Gillons’ used their extra game on the schedule to full advantage Monday, downing Taggs 3-1 to move into sole possession of first place in the women’s division of the Borderland Soccer Association.
Laureen Cousineau moved within a goal of league scoring leader Mandy Wilson from Curves by notching her 13th of the season, while Andrea Boileau and Shannon Koval added the others for Gillons’ (8-2-0). Angela Petsnick had the lone marker for winless Taggs (0-11-0).
The victory came one week after Gillons’ handled Taggs 7-3 June 30, with seven different scorers finding the back of the net for the victors.
Amanda Allan, Andrea Boileau, Cousineau, Susie Grynol, Carling Barton, Marina Boileau and Amy Wilson had goals for Curves, while Cheryl Wiersema potted a pair of markers and Keri Russell contributed a single for Taggs.
It was the Cousineau Show last Thursday in a 5-0 shutout of Curves, as the high-scoring forward collected four goals, while Grynol added the other.
Wilson fired a hat trick in Sunday’s 8-3 win by Curves over Taggs, while Rebecca Cornell chipped in with a pair. Lindsay Roy, Ashley Wilson, and Nicole Rogozinski had the other tallies for Curves (7-2-0). Tara McEachern, Penny Knapp responded for Taggs, while the third goal scorer was unavailable at press time.
Curves and Gillons’ hooked up again last night at St. Francis Sportsfield with first place on the line. The score was unavailable at press time.
The news for Gillons’ on the men’s side was even brighter, as the squad maintained an eight-point lead over defending league champion Taggs.
Gillons’ romped over winless ITS 6-1 Monday night, as Jeremy Wilson netted a hat trick, while Adam McTavish added a pair and Dan Poperechny popped in a single for Gillons’ (8-1-1). Barry Selin provided the only offence for ITS (0-10-0).
Only two other game took place last week, as Canada Day festivities and torrential downpours wiped out Tuesday and Wednesday action, respectively.
Third-place Nova (5-4-1) managed a 6-1 win over ITS, with Bosco Stopa drilling a second-half hat trick after ITS held a 1-0 lead at halftime before wearing down after playing the previous night and then facing a one-man disadvantage for most of the second half.
Andy Hallikas scored twice, while Chris Bujold added the other for Nova. Rob York did the damage offensively for ITS.
Taggs (5-2-2) took it to Nova this past Thursday, registering a 5-1 victory over the red-and-white warriors.
Scott McFayden, Scott Gurski, Mike Webb, Olaf Ruppenstein and Paul Danku connected for Taggs, while Andrew Mueller replied for Nova.
Gillons’ and Taggs were set for a showdown last night, with the score unavailable at press time.
Olaf Ruppenstein is out front in the goal scoring race with eight, while Wilson is second with seven, and Matt Basaraba (Gillons’) and Thor Ruppenstein (Taggs) each have six.
