With just over two weeks before the inaugural Rick Pearson Memorial Golf Tournament at Kitchen Creek Golf Course, there is still time for teams to get involved.
“I have 16 teams registered right now,” said event co-ordinator Sonja Bodnarchuk.
“We’re definitely looking for more,” added Nadine Johnson, also a tournament coordinator. “We would like to see 30 foursomes, though 36 would be the best!”
Teams of four can register for the Texas-scramble format golf tourney aimed at raising money for the Kidney Foundation and the local dialysis unit.
“The money raised will stay in the community,” Bodnarchuk explained.
The entry fee is $50 per person plus each team of four must raise a minimum of $100 in donations.
Johnson explained that the word needs to get out to teams so they can pick up pledge sheets in time to raise money for the cause. The person who raises the most money will be presented with a plaque.
Bodnarchuk said that there will be prizes available for the top four teams in the tournament and they’ve received some prizes already for some of the “hole games.”
“We’re going to have a longest drive on hole 17,” she explained, “and a closest to the pin on both the front and back nine.”
Prizes that have already been donated for the “hole games” include an X-Box entertainment system with games by High Roads Communications in Toronto, a $100 cash prize donated by Probation and Parole, and a three night trip to Camp Narrows Lodge for four donated by the lodge.
She explained they are still looking to get a few more prizes so there can be a closest to the pin prize on each par 3 on the course.
“We’re encouraging people to come out,” said Johnson. “It’s for all ages.”
The tournament is honour of the late Rick Pearson who passed away in January, 2003 and had lived with kidney disease all his life.
