A group of cyclists touring Canada from British Columbia to Newfoundland passed through Emo late last week after having stayed at Caliper Provincial Park near Nestor Falls the previous night.
There are 19 in the group altogether, including some hailing from Vancouver and Toronto here in Canada as well as others from such places as Wisconsin, England, and Germany.
“We had planned out our schedule right to the ‘T’,” noted spokesman Joseph Lee of Toronto, who flew to Vancouver to take part in this event and will fly home once they reach the East Coast.
Having already covered about 3,000 km (averaging 130 km a day on a good day), the group expects the trip to take about 75 days to complete.
“We had a difficult ride through Saskatchewan,” he said, though adding they all enjoyed the scenery and farmlands, which were beautifully landscaped.
He also said Alberta was a tough ride up and down hills, which slowed them up just a bit.
Lee added there is another group riding bikes on a different route, going through the United States.
“There is a truck that travels with us,” he noted, adding it carries all their camping gear and equipment.
“It [the truck] is never too far away if something urgent should arise,” he explained. “And on our way if there is a restaurant, we will stop to relax and have a sandwich.”
Later in the day, I met up with the group at McDonald’s in Fort Frances, getting freshened up and preparing for an overnight stay just east of the Noden Causeway.
