Phyllis Rae Kivari, longtime resident of Castlegreen Co-operative and most recently Bethammi Nursing Home, started her heavenly journey on February 20, 2025, with her daughters by her side. Born on March 18, 1935, she was the first daughter of Benjamin and Lila (Shannon) Hadley. Phyl (who disliked the name “Phyllis”) was raised on the farm in Barwick, Ont., with her older brother and sisters. After departing the family home in her teen years, she worked various jobs in the hospitality trade. Soon, she met Charles and they married and stayed that way for 60 years. They raised their family in Atikokan and after retirement they moved to Thunder Bay.
Phyl was blessed with a sense of humour that saw her through some challenging years and situations. She could always see the humour in everyday life which, in her later years, all of Castlegreen could read about in her monthly column in the Castlegreen news. She had a knack for writing and often performed songs she would compose for special occasions. Music, games and literature played big parts in her life. She passed on her love of books, singing and laughter to her children and grandchildren.
She will be remembered with love by her children Randy, Carla, Mike, (Terry-Lynne) and Jill, (Gary); her grandchildren Rick Kivari, Ryan Toxopeus, Tyler Kivari, (Melissa) Nicole Dahlquist, (Mike) Rene Kivari, (Jasmine) and Colt Knorr; her great-grands Gray, Danica and Charlie; and her siblings Bruce, Rilla and Glenda.
Phyl was predeceased by her husband Charles; her parents Ben and Lila Hadley; sisters Lynne, June, Dell, and her brother Grant.
The family would like to thank the nursing and administration staff at Bethammi Nursing Home for their excellent care and compassion during Mom’s last months. You made a difficult time much easier.
A celebration of life will be held for family and friends in the summer. Her spirit will live on through the lives she touched.
