Summer art camp slated next week

Organizers are getting ready for an annual summer art camp for kids here next Tuesday-Thursday (Aug. 26-28), which is shaping up to be as fun as ever.
“I’m looking forward to it,” said local artist Linda Lovisa, who will lead this year’s camp along with museum curator and artist Pam Hawley.
“Pam and I have been doing this for 10 years and it’s a great program,” she added.
This year’s camp, which runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day at the Fort Frances Museum (weather permitting, some of it will take place at Pither’s Point), is intended for young artists aged eight and up.
“The theme will be ‘All about me.’ Normally, it’s an open thing, but we’ve put a lot of thought into it this year,” noted Lovisa. “In think it’s going to challenge the participants.”
The camp will see kids working in various mediums, such as paint, pencil, collage, and sculpture to make portraits, as well as representations of human expressions and gestures.
An example of the artists’ input in the work is a still-life project in which the kids will have to pick three of their favourite objects from home and bring them in to make an artistic representation of them.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Lovisa enthused.
The three-day camp will culminate with an art show the students will put together for their friends and family to visit upstairs at the museum.
“That’s an important, and fun, part of the camp—to have the artists make up invitations and set up an exhibit to show off what they’ve done,” said Lovisa.
Hawley noted the camp has not yet filled up so if anyone is still interested, they can call the museum at 274-7891.
Cost for the three-day program is $75, which covers the cost of materials. Kids are asked to bring along their own lunch.
