Rumour has it that the official motto at Crossroads School in Devlin is “Go big, or go home.”
If so, the school certainly lived up to its motto when more than 200 students and staff doffed their books and donned their running shoes for the fourth-annual Terry Fox Run last Thursday.
And once again, they came through big-time.
When the final tally was in, the world-renowned run, which raises money every year for cancer research, was richer by $2,313.25 as a result of the exercise and the fundraising efforts that preceded it.
Crossroads principal Brian Love naturally was pleased with the way his school embraced the annual event, but not altogether surprised at the results.
“It was pretty consistent with the last three [years],” said Love, who also ran the five-km route. “We have a very supportive community here.”
Love said Crossroads has raised more than $8,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation in the four years he’s been there.
As an extra incentive, students were challenged to compete for the most pledges and they responded in true competitive style.
Grade 4 student Halle Shypit was the overall champion with $150 in pledges while the Grade 1 class outdid all the others with a total take of $435.
Other individual winners were Danielle Gregory (Grade 1), Megan Poirier (Grade 2), Alyssa Penner (Grade 3) Damian Stang (Grade 5), Joleen Stahn (Grade 6), Kurt Hill (Grade 7), and Garnet Cornell (Grade 8).
Each of the winners was presented with an official Terry Fox Run T-shirt.
