Soil and Crop choose new board

We made it…. The long month of January is nearly over. I think we are hoping that the extremely cold weather is over as well. Now, we need to work on getting rid of the wind and winter will be perfect. It is great to see the sun and it is staying light until well after 5 p.m. now and that really helps.

I tucked my cows into a nice spot in the bush during the cold weather last week but even though the temperatures have risen, the wind is still been blowing so I have continued feeding them in this comfortable spot. I am just a couple weeks from moving them home to the calving yard so I will likely just keep them in this area until then. I have been using up some old, less desirable hay to provide them with plenty of dry, cozy places to rest. This will also leave a nice seed bed for some improved pasture areas going forward. It is a double win! Lexi and walk to the cows twice a day but the last few days our trails are drifting in and if we meet a cow on the trail, it is quite a stand off between the dog and the cow on who is going to step off the trail. If a cow shakes her head, even slightly Lexi is long gone off the trail but some cows back down and them move for her. I am still resting Lexi’s leg but I think this short walk a couple times a day is hurting her too much.

The Rainy River Soil & Crop Improvement Association Board hosted their Annual Meeting last week. Alex Pollard, Stephan Gerber, Micha Gerber, Joe Bodnar, Dave Schraa, Wally Hunsperger and John Sawatzky make up their board. This group is always looking to expand their fleet of rental equipment so if you have ideas or suggestions, you should be sure to reach out. They are also considering doing a Canada Food Grains project. This project would have them grow a crop and sell it and donate the profits to Canada Food Grains which is a group that is working to fight hunger. Our neighbours in Thunder Bay have been doing this for a few years now.

I am searching for some new office ideas. I currently have four computers in my office and a large screen. I also am taking on a new little job that is going to require some storage space so I have been searching Pinterest for some ideas. I won’t always need that many computers but I will most likely always have two. My goal is to just keep one laptop on that is mainly used for my barn cameras. I considered moving my office downstairs but I decided against that now. Currently I barely have any desk space to write so I need to come up with a plan.

This week the Rainy River Valley Ag Society are hosting their AGM. This is another group that is well worth while getting involved in. I think many of us look forward to the Fall Fair every year and if you have some time, you will find it very rewarding!

My sister-in-law is celebrating a significant birthday today but she is battling pneumonia! Once she is better if you see her out and about please wish her a Happy Birthday!
