An open house recently was held at Donald Young School, beginning in the gym where staff members were introduced to the parents.
After this, the parents were invited to visit their child’s classrooms. Ms. Tolen held an information session in Grade 7/8 classroom for parents whose students are in her classroom all day.
Back by popular demand was the silent auction of Mosaic Garden Stones, which was set up in the hallway outside the gym.
A Scholastic book fair also was held during the open house.
A magazine subscription campaign also is underway again at DYS. Jeff Shannon from CC Reading held an assembly on Monday (Sept. 29) and introduced his company and its incentives to the students.
On the first prize day, 20 subscriptions had been handed in.
“We are encouraging students to make contact with the individuals they sold subscriptions to last year,” Shannon said.
In other news, though the weather wasn’t ideal, DYS held its annual Terry Fox Run, with students making their way to the west end of Emo via the Lions Park walkway and back.
All students were encouraged to participate in this worthwhile event and about $900 was raised. All money received will be forwarded to the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer research.
Meanwhile, congatulations to Maxwell Williams, Jordan King, George Kemper, Casey Grant, Tim Rosengren, and Stephen Hilliar for participating in the district chess championships held at Crossroads School last month.
Williams, King, Grant, and Hilliar qualified to participate in the Northern Ontario Schools Chess championships in Thunder Bay on Oct. 25.
Special thanks to Martin Williams and Kathy Leek for dedicating their time every Friday so the students have the opportunity to develop their chess skills.
