Senior Muskies back on hoops track

A team’s best players have to step to the forefront when it comes to halting any kind of losing streak.
Consider Carley McCormick and Trish Smith present and accounted for.
McCormick drained a game-high 13 points, while her fellow veteran Smith contributed a dozen, as the Muskie senior girls basketball team (5-1) rebounded from their only loss of the season two weeks ago to beat the host Kenora Broncos 41-29 in NorWOSSA action yesterday afternoon.
“The girls played very aggressively, and very fast paced,” said Muskie assistant coach Paul Noonan. “We tried some different defences, and put in a zone press. That really seemed to fluster (Kenora).”
The junior Muskies (0-6), attempting to build off a weekend which saw them collect their first victory of the year in their home tournament, put in another workman-like effort, but were eventually downed 30-22 by the Broncos.
Jessica Woodgate and Katie McTavish each had six points in the loss, while Michelle Cournoyer added four.
Both teams return to NorWOSSA action Oct. 30 at home against the Dryden Eagles.
The senior squad hosts its annual home tournament this weekend at “The Fish Tank,” with Dryden, Kenora, the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints, the Sioux Lookout Warriors, and the St. Ignatius Falcons from Thunder Bay slated to compete.
The Muskies open the tourney Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. against the Saints. They then challenge Sioux Lookout Saturday morning at 9 a.m., and finish the weekend against the Falcons that afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
The tournament championship will go to the team with the best record, with points for and against to be used in a tiebreaking situation.
