Sarah Dhillion may be missed by her family in Australia on her 16th birthday, but hopefully the excitement of celebrating Hallowe’en will lighten the load.
Sarah has never celebrated Hallowe’en as it is not an occasion marked in her country. But this past Sunday evening, she joined her new friends and exchange family as the entire group each made their own jack-o-lantern.
To give you an idea of how much fun and excitement were generated from the evening of cutting, carving, and designing, all six teens bravely stood on my deck as snow and wind whirled around them so I could take their pictures.
They’re proof that Sarah is becoming a real northern Canadian teen—and further proof that her friends all helped to make her very likely first and only Hallowe’en a great experience.

A non-denominational gospel service will be held Oct. 29 and Nov. 5, 12, and 19 beginning at 7:45 p.m. at the Devlin Community Hall. Ruth Howard and Amber Wilde will be in charge of the evenings.

The Emo Legion will hold a cribbage and 500 tournament this Saturday (Nov. 1). A cost of $12 applies, which includes a supper. Those interested are asked to pre-register by Friday.

Crafts Galore will take place Nov. 14-15 starting at 10 a.m. at the Emo Legion. The tables all have been purchased.

More crafts will be up for sale at the Emo Legion on Dec. 6 as part of the annual “Holly Daze” festivities.
The event also will feature a soup-and-sandwich luncheon, and the cost is $5. More information to follow.

The Crossroads girls who participated in the Legion Mid-Canada cross-country challenge in Thunder Bay on Saturday ended up placing fourth overall out of 26 teams.
Erin Kaemingh was the top local finisher (13th overall).
Unfortunately, the Crossroads boys had a couple of runners not show up so they didn’t qualify for the team event. However, Jake McTavish ran independently and placed eighth overall.
Both Jake and Erin will receive a $100 bursary from the Legion. More than 500 runners competed altogether.

Owen Lloyd Jones placed at the provincial chess championship last weekend and Thunder Bay and earned a berth to the national finals in Kapuskasing next July.

Remember to vote in the municipal election Nov. 10. An advance poll will be open this Saturday (Nov. 1) from noon to 6 p.m. at the municipal office.
Running for reeve are Ken McKinnon and Emily Watson, with Jim Belluz, Freeda Carmody, Len McCormick, Rod Storey, Tom Morrish, Rick Seidel, and Dale Stamarski vying for seats on council.
