Proud son

Dear sir:
I read with interest (and a few tears) your Remembrance Day feature, “Veteran recalls his private war.”
I am proud to have known Jim Alton for more than 48 years and while I am truly amazed at his story, I have never before heard him speak of his wartime experiences.
Yes, he is “modest about his wartime efforts” and he does “deserve the same gratitude and respect as those that never came back.”
Mr. Alton is equally modest about all his many accomplishments and successes, despite the real challenge of raising six children in difficult times. I have always known him to be a man of honesty and integrity, hard working, seldom, if ever, thinking of himself, never quitting.
His post-war years were never easy, yet he continued to sacrifice for his family and many friends—still fighting his “private war” to provide for them. He is the greatest man I know.  
I am not surprised at all that he “went out of a sense of duty”—he always acts out of a sense of duty to help those around him. How do I know this? Why, I am very proud and privileged to be his son.
I love you, Dad. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us.
