Donald Young School students held their Remembrance Day assembly in the gymnasium last Tuesday (Nov. 11) with parents, grandparents, and friends in attendance.
The simple program was in honour of our fallen comrades who served in two world wars and the Korean War, as well as peacekeeping missions since then.
Opening remarks and welcome were given by principal Lucinda Meyers, followed by the singing of “O Canada,” accompanied by organist Maria-Ann DeGroot and Katherine Williams on the violin.
Mrs. Williams also directed the school choir in “Flying Free,” a song about being free to achieve our full potential in life. Heather Williams then read a poem entitled, “This is the Year,” which was all about hoping for a time when the world will be at peace.
The Grade 5/6 class did a choral reading, “In Flanders Field,” accompanied by a slide show. Then led by Mr. Enns, the audience sang the traditional hymn, “O God Our Help.”
The Grade 2/3 class then had an acrostic poem, reciting “Please Wear a Poppy Today.”
Last Post and Reveille were performed by Mark Loney.
In other news at DYS, congratulations to Grade 6-8 girls who travelled to Atikokan on Nov. 1 to participate in a volleyball tournament. The girls played five games and made it to the semi-finals.
Thank you to Mrs. Allan, Marty Emond, and Lorette Lougheed for volunteering their time to train the group.
Cheese orders went home last Wednesday (Nov. 12) and must be returned by tomorrow (Nov. 20) to ensure that the cheese will be delivered by Dec. 11.
