‘Hillbilly’ humour set to hit stage

The drama students at Fort Frances High School are gearing up for another major production, this time a stage version of “The Beverly Hillbillies.”
“Someone took the first episode of the show and adapted it to the stage,” FFHS drama teacher and director Willa Kunkel said.
“It’s a really good family show you can bring your kids to. That’s why I chose it,” she added. “It’s pretty funny.”
All the characters from the popular television show, which ran from 1962-1971, will be portrayed, as well as a few that only were included in the stage version.
Students have been working on the play up to nine hours a week since September. But there’s still work to be done before opening night next Wednesday (Dec. 3).
“The hardest part is right now. We’re taking everything we’ve done and putting it together,” said Tracy Treflin, who plays Pearl Bodine.
“We have to get used to being in character,” added Dayna DeBenedet.
At a rehearsal Monday evening, the actors had their lines down, but were getting used to performing with their props on the set.
Many of the students in the play also performed in “By the Numbers,” Fort High’s musical revue that ran at the Townshend Theatre earlier this month, or in other stage productions at the school.
But for Julia Florek, who plays Granny, this will be her first time on the stage. “I don’t really know what to expect. It’s a little nerve-wracking,” she remarked.
Thomas Vanderiet, an exchange student from The Netherlands, also will be making make his debut on the Townshend stage. He admitted he’s “getting a little nervous,” but added he’s performed in plays back home.
Kunkel said there will be a bluegrass band dressed as hillbillies playing songs between acts, including the theme song to the T.V. show.
“The last few years, we’ve done very serious plays. This is a comedy that people can relate to,” Treflin said.
“Everyone has to come see it,” enthused Angela Huntley, who plays Mrs. Drysdale.
“The Beverly Hillbillies” will run Dec. 3-6 at the Townshend Theatre. Opening night is a half-price preview performance, with tickets costing $5.
Tickets for the other three performances cost $10 for adults and $6 for children and students, which are available at the theatre box office or at Northwoods Gallery and Gifts.
