Tomorrow, Sept. 18, 2024 in conjunction with the Seven Generations Education Institute’s Anishinaabemodaa – Waking Up Ojibwe program, Naicatchewenin First Nation (NFN) is hosting an all day conference on revitalizing the local indigenous language.

Brian Smith is one of the organizers, he says they hope to see more people learning the language of their ancestors.

“We’re going to revitalize the language and bring it up some more so we can promote Anishinaabemowin,” Smith said.

The event will open with a drum ceremony at 9 a.m. at the NFN Community Hall. Opening ceremonies will be conducted by Tommy Councillor and the Boonidwe’igan Community Drum.

Keynote speakers for the event are Ogimaawigwanebiik (Nancy Jones) and James Vukelich. Interactive breakout sessions will be led by Sandra Smith, Roy Tom and Dennis Smith.

Light breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided.

Registration was required but if you contact Alicia at aliciag@7generations.org or 807-274-2796 ext. 1240 you may still be able to attend.

Don’t miss this meaningful opportunity to connect, learn, and celebrate Anishinaabemowin.
