Teens top locals in ‘Gizzard’ run

Youth was served at the annual “Freeze Yer Gizzard Blizzard Run” during “Icebox Days” in International Falls on Saturday morning.
Emo’s Andrew Friesen and fellow 13-year-old Timo Brielmann from Pinewood posted the best results of any local runners with their showings in the five-km event.
Friesen covered the distances in 25:36 to finish fourth in the men’s division (and fifth overall) while Brielmann was right behind him to take fifth in the men’s group (and sixth overall) with a time of 26:38.
Karl Johnson, 14, made it three teens in the top 10 when the Mine Centre youth dashed to a 10th-place finish in 28:55.
A total of 46 runners finished the five-kme race while 173 participants crossed the finish line in the 10-km event on a wintry morning that certainly lived up to the name of the competition.
In the 10-km event, 48-year-old Bill Michl from Stratton showed he still has plenty of gas left in his tank by coming in 32nd in 47:36 to take top honours for competitors from this district.
Lavana Fox of Fort Frances had the highest local finish for a female in the division with a 56th-place showing in a time of 52:23. Last year, Fox came in second in the women’s 30-39 age group in a time of 47:20.
