One month after officially going on the air, station manager Brent Desrochers at CKWO 92.3 (The Wolf) has his sights set on being an integral part of local media while offering something different for listeners in Borderland.
“Things have been really good so far. We’ve been getting a good response—better than we expected,” Desrochers said last week.
“We’ve been playing music—classic rock—and, of course, broadcasting Borderland Thunder games,” he noted. “We’re slowly getting our advertising base, more and more each day.
“And the message we really want to get across is this station is for Couchiching, Fort Frances, and International Falls,” he stressed. “We want to work on expanding what we do this spring.”
One of the ways the station wants to do that is to start broadcasting Muskie hockey games.
“It’s been such an institution for so long in Fort Frances—we’d like to see it come back,” Desrochers said.
“It’s a matter of manpower. It takes three people do the games and we should be able to arrange that,” he noted.
“Next season, I’m ready to start going full bore,” he remarked, though adding there’s a slight possibility the station could snag the playoffs this season.
Desrochers also said he’d like to do more for the area in general, such announcing community events for not-for-profit organizations and having on-air interviews to promote local fundraisers, etc.
Any groups or service clubs with events to promote can call Desrochers at 275-5027.
CKWO 92.3 received its licence from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in November, but didn’t officially go on-air until Jan. 5.
“If you’re looking for a change of pace, give us a listen,” pitched Desrochers. “We don’t have a format like any other radio station in the area. We have a format of our own.”
