After taking a break for several years, the Rainy Lake Multicultural Association staged “Culturama” for the past three summers in a row.
But it appears the RLMA will be taking another break from hosting that event—at least for the near future.
“There won’t be a ‘Culturama.’ We’re going to be trying to do smaller events,” said Bev Kotnik.
“German nights, Scandinavian nights—we’ll try a number of things at different times throughout the year,” she noted, adding the public should keep their eyes peeled for more concerts and dinners later this year.
A good example of such a smaller event was the “Tanglefoot” concert, which took place last night at the Royal Canadian Legion here.
Kotnik said she would have liked to have lined up a St. Patrick’s Day event of some sort, too—such as the cabbage and corned beef dinner the RLMA hosted a few years ago—but added time was a little short this year.
Kotnik noted the RLMA decided not to stage another “Culturama” because the event, while enjoyed by those who did come out, just wasn’t pulling in the numbers to support it.
Staging a “Culturama” was a significant undertaking for the RLMA—the day-long celebration usually featured at least 10 acts (both local and from places such as Winnipeg) as well as a myriad of food vendors to co-ordinate.
But Kotnik also stressed the RLMA would keep working its fundraiser Bingos and as long as they continued to do so, the group would work to provide district residents with some international spice to their lives.
