After raising about $64,000 last year, the local Canadian Cancer Society’s fourth-annual “Relay for Life” is looking to top that when the event takes place June 25-26 at Pither’s Point.
“We have 21 teams signed up now, but we’re looking for more,” said Sue Danku, who sits on the organizing committee. “We’re looking for teams of 10-12 people to come out, raise pledges, and have fun.
“That’s really our main push right now,” she added. “Anyone who’s interested in being a team captain can just go down to Pharmasave—who are once again our event sponsors—and sign up and get a team captain’s kit.”
For those who might not know, the “Relay for Life” is a 12-hour event—running from 7 p.m. on Friday, June 25 to 7 a.m. on Saturday, June 26—in which teams of pledged participants take turns walking a course at Pither’s Point.
All proceeds go to the Canadian Cancer Society.
“We’d like each person to collect $100, but if someone raises $90 and another person on their team raises $110 or more, that’s OK,” noted Danku.
“Most people go above and beyond that amount, though. Some individuals get $1,500 in pledges,” she remarked.
Danku said organizers have been working hard since March to get everything lined up for the event, whether it’s the entertainment (which goes on through a good part of the night) or the breakfast on Saturday morning.
As in past years, luminaries will be available for people to purchase in memory of—or in honour of—loved ones affected by cancer.
The candles, which will be placed around the walking track at Pither’s Point, cost $5 each. They can be purchased at a number of local businesses as well as the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce.
