The Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship last night asked town council for financial support in the form of an interest-free loan, payable over a five-year period, to accommodate the purchase of tables, chairs, and a storage trailer.
Council referred the request to the Administration and Finance executive committee for a recommendation.
Also at last night’s meeting, town council saw a presentation of a book created by Grade 1-2 students from Sixth Street School called “The Best Things in Fort Frances” during its regular meeting last night.
There also was an unveiling by Grade 3 students of their “Generations Can Connect” book, in which the students visited the elderly at Rainycrest Home for the Aged and the Sister Kennedy Centre to find out what they remembered most fondly about Fort Frances.
Both these presentations were in response to the town centennial committee’s invitation for schools to participate in 2003 centennial activities.
Also last night, council:
•accepted the resignation of treasurer Diane Pearson;
•heard an oral report on division activities from Coun. Sharon Tibbs, chairperson of the Planning and Development executive committee;
•passed a bylaw to authorize the levying and collection of a special charge of taxes upon the Business Improvement Area (the total levy is $53,075 for 2003, with two payments to be made by July 31 and Sept. 2);
•passed a bylaw to authorize the entering into of a lease agreement with Canadian Wilderness Outposts Ltd. and Lyle Armstrong at the Fort Frances Municipal Airport;
•passed a bylaw to approve a contract to George Armstrong Ltd. for supply and delivery of granular materials and reconstruction of Front Street;
•passed a bylaw to approve a contract with JTJ Contracting Ltd.
for asphalt patching;
•passed a bylaw to approve a memorandum of understanding with Datafix for Web hosting services for the purposes of “Municipal VoterView”;
•passed a bylaw to approve purchase and licensing agreements and other documents with various suppliers of computer hardware and software;
•referred a letter from Brad Hogan regarding the Business Improvement Area’s failure to have banners and flags in pace prior to the Victoria Day and Memorial Day long weekends to the BIA;
•referred a request from the Ministry of Transportation, via NOMA, for a review of proposed regulations regarding increasing highway access for off-road vehicles to the Planning and Development executive committee for recommendation;
•referred a request from NDP leader and local MPP Howard Hampton, on behalf of a committee of residents from Green Manor, to have a screened gazebo built for the provision of environmental protection to the Rainy River District Social Services Administrative Board for recommendation; and
•referred a request from the County of Grey for support of its resolution regarding the need for senior levels of government to take immediate action to mitigate the negative effects of “mad cow” disease to the Rainy River District Municipal Association for recommendation.
