The local Human Resource Centre of Canada for Students (HRCC-S) will be putting Mayor Glenn Witherspoon behind bars on Wednesday to promote student employment.
“Jobs . . . or Jail” is a competition between the town and the HRCC-S to encourage community members and employers to hire students for their odd job needs.
“I can’t think of a better way to promote student employment,” said Kerri Langtry, a summer employment officer at the HRCC-S.
Beginning at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Mayor Witherspoon will be locked in a “jail cell” at the Fort Frances Museum courtyard until a minimum of 20 job postings are made.
He will be given a phone and phone book, and will be “contacting employers and community members to let them know about our free services and programs,” Langtry said.
“It’s a good cause,” Mayor Witherspoon said, stressing “the need for young people to have job experience.”^While the HRCC-S in Fort Frances has never staged this event before, other offices in Ontario have, with great success.
“It will be fun. I hope we are as successful as the other HRCC-S offices in Ontario have been,” Langtry said.
As well, four students have volunteered to do two hours of work as part of the promotion. Each student has a draw box, and anyone who needs help is welcome to fill out a ballot for the draws.
One student will babysit, one will cut grass, and the other two are labourers.
Community members and employers who have odd jobs are encouraged to contact the HRCC-S at 274-7724.
