Annual ‘Rugrats’ tourney lauded

Crossroads School in Devlin hosted the annual “Rugrats” soccer tournament last Thursday, giving local Grade 3 students a chance to participate in a day of soccer fun.
The tournament was organized to give the students a chance to meet kids from other elementary schools in the area—those they eventually will be going to high school with.
“It’s really nice for the kids to be able to come out and meet all the other kids,” said Crossroads principal Brian Love. “I think it’s great for all the schools to come out. All the coaches did a great job.”
Six schools took part in the games, with each entering two teams which played in separate pools.
The host school took first place in Pool ‘A,’ followed by St. Michael’s, Alexander MacKenzie, Donald Young School, Mine Centre Public School, and F.H. Huffman.
St. Michael’s captured top spot in Pool ‘B,’ with Mine Centre and Donald Young tying for second place. Alexander MacKenzie was third, followed by Crossroads and Huffman.
“Everyone took home a medal,” said Love. “It’s great to see the kids out there enjoying themselves. I think that’s pretty evident when you have 250 kids and no problems.”
Some of the participants obviously were experienced in the game while others were not that knowledgeable. “It’s a great way to get the kids started,” noted Love.
The referees for the one-day tournament were Grade 7 and 8 students from Crossroads.
A few spectators took in the games, which were played on the two mini-fields behind the school.
