The first chapter in this season’s edition of the storied rivalry between the Borderland Thunder and the Dryden Ice Dogs will be written tonight.
The game—set for 7:30 p.m. at the Ice for Kids Arena—pits the defending SIJHL champs (1-1) against the title-holders from the league’s inaugural campaign the previous year in the Ice Dogs (1-2-1).
The Thunder will have their U.S.-born players in the line-up for the first time this season after a disagreement between Hockey Canada and USA Hockey over transfer payments for players from one side of the border competing for a team on the other side was resolved.
The squad also is coming off a 10-day layoff, but hope rust isn’t a factor against a Dryden squad that’s fresh off its first victory of the year in Saturday’s 8-4 win over the K&A Variety Golden Hawks.
Former Muskie Cody Mosbeck was the Ice Dogs’ offensive catalyst in that game, netting a hat trick and adding an assist to key the Dryden attack.
Tonight will mark the mid-point of a season-opening five-game homestand for the Thunder, who are in the midst of a strange section of their schedule that will see them get another 10-day break from action after facing the Ice Dogs.
