Memorial tourney tops $7,000 mark

Some shots found the hole; many other came to rest in wooded or watery graves.
But it wasn’t so much the competition as it was the cause that counted at yesterday’s inaugural Rick Pearson Memorial Golf Tournament at Kitchen Creek Golf Club.
More than $7,000 was raised by the 36 four-person teams that took part in the Texas scramble best-ball format, with proceeds going to the Kidney Foundation and local dialysis unit.
On a scorching day out on the links, Mel Larson and his team of Brady Hupet, Dave Hyatt, and Donna Lee were on fire as they captured top spot in the tourney with a combined score of 12-under 61.
Second place went to Paul Morrison and his crew of Jon Dupuis and Geoff MacEachern, who finished four strokes back at sevenunder 65 (the name of the fourth member of the team was unavailable at press time today).
Mark Angus and his group of Wayne Strachan, Bob Mainville, and Jeff McKinnon won a threeteam countback tiebreaker to take third with a six-under 66.
The quartet just nosed out the team of Scott and Lori Clendenning, Leann Godin, and Brian Beers, along with the family foursome of Paul, John, Dan, and Brenda Bock.
Mike Bodnarchuk, Darwin Woods, and Rich Walton were next in line with a five-under 67 to finish sixth (the fourth member of their team also was unavailable at press time today).
In the closest-to-the-pin contests, the winners were Carol Meyers (#5), Tom LeDoux (#7), Darwin Woods (#11), and Brian Houghton (#13). Longest drive champs were Maria Sanders for the ladies at #1 and Greg Ross for the men on #18.
The individual bringing in the most donations was Renée Mac- Donald, with a total of $456, while the Bruce Holmlund group raised the most as a team (just over $700).
