Fire crews battle three local blazes

The local Ministry of Natural Resources office reported today that three forest fires which started east and northeast of town over the last five days are all under control.
MNR fire supervisor Gary Harland said all three were minor in nature and posed no threat.
“Two of the fires are declared out and the third will be declared today,” added Harland.
That latter fire—located near Highway 502—was the largest of the three at about three hectares.
“There has been no damage and no danger,” Harland stressed.
Hot, dry, and windy conditions were expected again today but according to the MNR’s weather office, showers are forecast by late tomorrow or some time on Wednesday and should continue for two days—reducing the fire hazard.
The local MNR fire office currently has three crews available.
There initially were 10 crews here in the spring, but six are deployed in British Columbia while two others have been decommissioned.
Harland said additional firefighting support is available from Thunder Bay and Kenora, should the need arise, but he does not anticipate they will be necessary.
