The town’s “Citizen of the Year” selection committee is asking the public to get their thinking caps on to pick the most deserving person for 2003.
“The cool weather is coming, and with that, thoughts of the Santa Claus parade. And we can’t have that without our ‘Citizen of the Year,’” Bill Gushulak of the selection committee said last week.
The nomination forms are available now at the information desk at the Civic Centre. About 30 letters requesting nominations have also been sent out to local service clubs and other organizations.
Gushulak, who was “Citizen of the Year 2000,” said anyone who has done an outstanding job for the community in any way is eligible for the award.
The only stipulation is that the recipient be a resident of the Town of Fort Frances and that the nominee not presently hold elected office.
He and Mark Kowalchuk (“Citizen of the Year 1994”) form the selection committee, along with Mayor Glenn Witherspoon and a town councillor (last year it was Coun. Deane Cunningham).
Completed nomination forms must be returned to the Civic Centre by 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct.
31.
Last year saw about 20 nominations, some of which were duplicates.
Last year’s winners were Jean and Lin Boileau.
Other previous recipients included Dede Mallory (1988), Albert McKelvie (1989), Florence and Woody Gray (1990), Jean Scheirer (1991), George Wood (1992), Dr.
Audrey Johnstone (1993), Pastor Earl Swanson (1995), Gordon McTaggart (1996), Terry Ogden (1997), Walter Horban (1998), Jim Cumming (1999), and John McTaggart (2001).
The “Citizen of the Year” will be formally honoured at the town’s annual appreciation banquet in late November or early December, and also will likely be in the Santa Claus parade.
