Thunder to meet Hawks on road

The Borderland Thunder’s weekend schedule once again is filled with Hawk hunting plans.
Tonight signals the start of the Thunder’s road schedule for the 2003-04 season as they begin a two-game series against the K&A Variety Golden Hawks in Thunder Bay.
The second contest is set for tomorrow night.
Borderland (3-2-0-0), currently in third place in the SIJHL, beat the last-place Hawks (1-6-2-0) by scores of 9-0 and 9-5 here last Friday and Saturday, respectively.
The defending league champs thrived in the third period of each game, scoring five goals both nights to claim victory.
The Thunder will look to scoring leader Kevin Webb (eight points), Josh McAndrew (seven), and Ian Lockman (seven) to continue fuelling their offensive attack along with Nate Weossner, who exploded for four goals in Saturday night’s win to give him a team-high five for the season.
The Hawks, meanwhile, will try to get back on the winning track behind the efforts of their points leader, Vince Kurzewski, who currently is third in SIJHL scoring.
He leads the league in goals (eight) and power-play points (eight), as well as topping all defencemen with 13 points.
In related news, it’s uncertain whether the Thunder will have their newest acquisition in the lineup for this weekend’s series in Thunder Bay.
Forward Manno Copenace, who worked out with the Thunder in the pre-season, was acquired Wednesday from the Southeast Blades of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League in exchange for a pair of first-year Borderland players, forward Jordan Murray and defenceman Ryan Murray.
Jordan Murray had one goal and two assists in two games with the Thunder while Ryan Murray posted one goal in five games.
The Thunder’s next home game is this Tuesday (Oct. 21) at 7:30 p.m. when the first-place Dryden Ice Dogs invade the Ice for Kids Arena.
