Catholic board’s rural strategy gets fiscal boost

The Northwest Catholic District School Board will discuss ways to distribute an expected $486,000 in additional funding from the Ministry of Education for their Rural Education Strategy Plan at tonight’s regular meeting of the board.
The money, which must be spent at schools that qualify for Distant Schools Allocation, will go towards things like, but not limited to, increasing speech assistant time in schools, increasing learning material budgets, increasing wide area network data bandwidth for better data transfer and Internet access, increase teacher numbers to address large class sizes, and increasing teacher special education staffing.
Other things to be discussed at tonight’s 7 p.m. videoconference meeting at the board office here (555 Flinders Avenue) include the school board’s five-year facilities plan and student achievement Initiatives.
Trustees will also discuss the first annual board accessibility plan for disabled students and guests to be submitted the Ministry of Citizenship to meet obligations under the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001.
The plan addresses each building to determine what needs to be done to make them “barrier free” under the Ontario Building code.
The board will also discuss a director’s report on Aboriginal Education and the board’s variance report.
And committee reports from the Special Education Advisory Committee and Native Advisory Committee will be heard.
