After the weekend they had, any chance the Muskie senior girls’ basketball squad had to hone their offence was most welcomed.
The Muskies had their share of shooting woes while going 2-1 in their annual home tournament, but looked much sharper—at least in the first half—en route to a 47-30 win over the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints (Kenora) in exhibition play here last night.
Displaying a much more relaxed style, the Muskies held the Saints to no points in the first six minutes while building a 27-13 halftime lead.
The second half was somewhat sloppier on the home side’s part, but was highlighted by the cameo appearance in the game by Muskies’ manager and Australian exchange student Sarah Dhillon.
Muskie coach Mike Busch gave the visitor from Down Under three shifts for a combined total of about 12 minutes—and Dhillon showed her appreciation by collecting three rebounds while giving both her teammates and herself a thrill.
“I was really nervous . . . they pretty well made me go in,” a beaming Dhillon said afterwards about her first appearance in a competitive basketball game.
“The girls were really helpful and supportive, though. I’m glad they made me do it,” she added.
Stephanie ‘Mouse’ Mattson and Carley McCormick paced the Muskie attack with seven points apiece while Jess Trent led the Saints with 10.
Both the Muskie senior and junior girls’ hoops teams host the Dryden Eagles in NorWOSSA action, as do the senior and junior boys volleyball teams.
Play was slated to get underway at 3:30 p.m. at Fort High.
