Court teams sweep

Talk about an ideal start to the New Year.
The Muskie court teams squads began 2004 in winning fashion as all four defeated their Kenora Bronco counterparts in Nor- WOSSA action here yesterday afternoon.
The quartet of victories was the first Muskie sweep of the 2003-04 school year.
The most pleasant surprise came from the junior boys’ basketball team (1-2), which emphatically shed its winless tag with a 55-46 victory over a Broncos team that had thrashed the locals 59-26 in their season-opener Dec. 11.
Kyle Perrott led the black-andgold with 18 points. Andrew Dobie added 12 while Logan Donaldson had 10 in a game that saw Fort High lead by as many as 17 points in the second half.
Lynn Osbourne had eight points to pace the Broncos.
The Muskie senior boys’ hoopsters, who were without veteran forward Cullan McGinnis due to a back injury, ran their record to 3-0 with a 61-51 defeat of the visiting Broncos.
Kevin Gemmell collected 21 points for the victors while Andrew Mueller netted 17. Glen Williams had 14 in a losing cause for Kenora, with Mitch Kinger adding 10.
Meanwhile, in girls’ volleyball action, the two Muskie squads took different but eventually successful routes to their respective 3-1 victories in their best-of-five clashes with the Broncos.
The juniors (3-0), with first-year players Shauna Jones and Michelle Cournoyer missing from the lineup due to ankle injuries suffered in practice over the holidays, squeaked out a pair of close wins in their first two games by scores of 25-21 and 25-23.
Then in the third, Kenora jumped out to an 18-6 advantage before holding off a furious Muskie comeback to win 25-19.
But there would be no such reprieve for the Broncos in the fourth game after grabbing a 20- 14 lead.
Led by the serving of Sandi Elliott, who served nine-straight points including a pair of aces, the Muskies roared back for a 25-22 victory to clinch the match.
The senior Muskies (2-1) won their first game 25-14, but after substituting mostly untested firstyear players for the second one, they fell 25-23.
With the starters back in the line-up, Fort High wrapped up the match with 25-17 and 25-12 victories.
The senior spikers are in Thunder Bay this weekend for a tournament at Lakehead Univer-sity.
All four teams return to Nor- WOSSA action next Thursday (Jan.
15) when they travel to Dryden.
Their next home action is not until Feb. 12, when the Eagles make the return trip to the “Fish Tank.”
